 S549 entered the Rail Transport Museum on the 4th of December, 1972 and was placed on display towards the rear of the museum, a position it would sit in for the next twelve years. Edmund Moir became the caretaker of this locomotive as it was a personal favourite and with the amount of attention he gave to the engine no doubt contributed to the good condition it was in when it was chosen to be restored.
